Mention of Prophet Ayub in Holy Quran

In Holy Quran – the holy book of Muslims – Prophet Ayub is mentioned 4 times. This holy book confirms the books revealed by God earlier and mentions detailed stories about Prophet Abraham, Prophet Jacob, Prophet Joseph, Prophet Moses, Prophet David, Prophet Solomon, Prophet Jesus and others.

In the Holy Quran, Prophet Ayoub is mentioned in chapters of Surah Al Nisa, Surah Al Anam, Surah Al Anmbiya and Surah Sa’ad.

In the verse number 163 of Surah Nisa (Chpater 4):

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And we revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].

In the verse number 84 of Surah Al Anam (Chapter 6):

And We gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob – all [of them] We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the doers of good.

In the verses number 83 and 84 of Surah Al Anmbiya (Chapter 21):

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allah ].

From verses number 41 to 44 of Surah Sa’ad (Chapter 38):

And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment.”

[So he was told], “Strike [the ground] with your foot; this is a [spring for] a cool bath and drink.”

And We granted him his family and a like [number] with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for those of understanding.

[We said], “And take in your hand a bunch [of grass] and strike with it and do not break your oath.” Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah].

In the last verse, Allah mentioned striking his wife with bunch of grass. To understand this, we have to refer to what happened at the time of the prophet. Nabi Ayub was patient during the trial. Satan reminded Prophet Ayub’s wife of her life before Job’s illness and how they were abundant in family and fortune.

Although his wife did not lose faith, asked Ayub A.S. to ask God to remove this suffering. Prophet Job remained steadfast, told her that this suffering had been for a relatively short period of time and, without thinking, told her that he would beat her with hundred strokes for complaining.

After he was cured, Allah ordered him to take some grass and use these to hit her hundred times. By doing this, Hazrat Ayub didn’t break his oath to Allah and didn’t hurt her as well.

Mention of Prophet Job in Bible

Prophet Job is mentioned in the first chapter of the Holy Scriptures of Job in the Old Testament. It is said that his native country was the land of Aouss, which according to the tenth chapter of Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, was located towards Safar (Dhofar).

There was a man in the country of Uz named Job. He was a man of complete integrity, who feared God and turned away from evil. He had seven sons and three daughters. His estate included seven thousand sheep and goats, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.
