Salalah is a beautiful place with a wide variety of landscapes, Subhan Allah! These include beaches, mountains, sinkholes, sand dunes, and caves. Among the many caves, the one on the western side, Marneef Cave, is the most popular. It is visited frequently along with Wadi Darbat on the other side of Salalah.

Marneef Cave

Marneef Cave in Salalah is close to the stunning Al Mughsail Beach, a top picnic spot for locals and tourists. This attraction offers scenic views, natural beauty, and a relaxing atmosphere. Families and visitors often plan weekend picnics and evening outings here. During the Khareef season, the area becomes very crowded due to the cool climate and lush greenery brought by the monsoon.

Marneef Cave is not a deep underground cavern but a remarkable natural rock formation. It features scenic views, blowholes, and a unique coastal landscape, making it one of the top places to visit in Salalah.

In Arabic, there are two types of caves – Ghar (غار) for small caves and Kahf (الكهف) for larger ones. Marneef Cave is considered an Al Kahf due to its size.

A Cave Mentioned in the Holy Quran

One chapter of the Holy Quran is named Al-Kahf (The Cave). While it does not refer to Marneef Cave, the story of the young people who sought refuge in a cave reminds visitors of the cave’s protective nature. They retreated from their city to preserve their monotheistic beliefs against the prevalent polytheism.

18:9 Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?

18:10 [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”

18:11 So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.

18:12 Then We awakened them to show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating the time they had remained.

18:13-22 [Additional verses describing their story and lessons.]

These verses are translated by Saheeh International. Read more at Quran.com.

A Short Walk from the Car Park

The cave sits 3–4 meters above the parking area. Visitors can use stairs or a paved ramp, making it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Rest Under the Shade

Benches under Marneef Cave provide a relaxing spot to enjoy views of Mughsail Beach and the blowholes. During the Khareef season in July and August, the cave also protects visitors from the mist.

Walking to the Blowholes

The blowholes are about 5–6 meters from the cave. The route includes both stairs and a ramp. Healthy visitors will find the short walk easy. The steps (around 50) are visible in the photo below.

From the blowholes, you can admire the full view of Marneef Cave—a perfect spot to appreciate this natural wonder.

Al-Mughsail Blowholes

Close to Marneef Cave are three impressive blowholes, also known as Mughsail Natural Fountains. These blowholes have safety meshes. During the Khareef season, water jets can reach up to 28 meters.

Viewing galleries and gazebos provide safe areas to enjoy the rough sea and spectacular scenery. Never cross the fencing for safety.

Take nothing but memories; leave nothing but footprints.

Location

Marneef Cave and the blowholes are near Mughsayl Beach. After Cyclone Mekunu in 2018, the direct road was damaged. Visitors now take a scenic detour via Fazayia Beach, Rakhyut, or Dalkut. The route offers mountain views, creeks, and sometimes camels crossing the road or water.

Camels near Marneef Cave

The cave is about 40–50 minutes from Salalah city by car.
