Barbecue is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Salalah. With its lovely weather, outdoor activities are possible throughout the year. The Khareef season is ideal for barbecue, when the mountains turn lush green and look stunning. You can enjoy barbecue on beaches and parks.
We have tried several spots for making delicious barbecue in Salalah, Oman. Our favorites include:
- Ad-Dahariz Park, next to the white sand Ad-Dahariz Beach
- Ittin
- Wadi Darbat, one of the best places to barbecue during the Khareef season, with amazing views and plenty of tourists enjoying the season.
What You Need for Barbecue in Salalah
To enjoy a successful barbecue, gather these essential items:
1. Meat
Halal meat can be bought from Carrefour in Salalah Gardens Mall, Lulu Hypermarket, or other local stores on Al-Rubat Street. Options include chicken, beef, mutton, and fish. You can also buy ready-to-cook marinated meat, but we prefer to prepare our own marinade with spices, garlic and ginger powders, salt, cooking oil, yogurt, and sauces like chili sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce, or HP sauce.
2. Barbecue Grill
Choose a grill that supports a comfortable standing posture to prevent back pain. A grill with wheels and folding options is ideal for easy transportation.
3. Safety Gear and Tools
Wear an apron and gloves for personal safety. A good barbecue tool set should include stainless steel tongs, spatula, fork, basting brush, and a short-handled grill brush with scrubber pad.
4. Skewers
Use skewers for boneless meat or chicken. Choose wooden (single-use) or stainless steel (reusable) skewers.
5. Trays and Grills
Rotatable and adjustable trays are best for barbecue preparation.
6. Fuel and Fire Essentials
Use barbecue briquettes or charcoals for burning. Charcoal lighter fluid, wooden pieces, and a matchbox are required to start the fire.
7. Plates, Glasses, and Cutlery
Disposable plates, glasses, forks, knives, and spoons are recommended for outdoor barbecue to minimize weight and cleanup.
Additional Tips
- Use aluminium foil to keep the meat fresh after marination.
- Supervise children around the barbecue.
- Dispose of trash properly and keep the area clean.
- Use a hot-pot to keep barbecue warm if serving together.
- Bring a kettle for tea or coffee and drinks like water or juice.
- Say “Bismillah ArRehman ArRaheem” before eating and “Alhumdulilah” after finishing.
